The US Department of Energy has funded a two million dollar program to work on a more efficient way to eliminating unreacted methane. Unreacted methane is a potent greenhouse gas. A greenhouse gas is a gas that traps heat in our atmosphere.
This new natural gas catalyst will completely boost clean transportation, which is imperative to our environment's future. Now that drilling technology has greatly improved, natural gas is capable of lasting us centuries. Using this is both inexpensive and better for the environment, and that is why there has been a renewed push for using natural gas for transportation. Natural gas creates far less carbon dioxide than gasoline or diesel combustion.

According to the United States Environmental Agency, (epa.gov) They are:
- : Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil), solid waste, trees and wood products, and also as a result of certain chemical reactions (e.g., manufacture of cement). Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere (or "sequestered") when it is absorbed by plants as part of the biological carbon cycle.
- : Methane is emitted during the production and transport of coal, natural gas, and oil. Methane emissions also result from livestock and other agricultural practices and by the decay of organic waste in municipal solid waste landfills.
- : Nitrous oxide is emitted during agricultural and industrial activities, as well as during combustion of fossil fuels and solid waste.
We already have created cars that run on natural gases that are much better for our environment.
