To be brutally honest, I have been sick as a dog and my mother would not allow me to go outside to build this shelter. But I can still give you my design ideas. So from years of girl scouts and being close with my grandfather, an eagle scout and a ruthless only-bare-necessities type camper, I know that to make a shelter out in the cold what you truly need is insulation. So first I'd dig out a fairly large area of all the snow and maybe even into the dirt if I could. To make my shelter I would make almost like a bubble or Teepee with the tarp (you know, like the rainbow parachute every kid had in preschool gym class) and using a large stick in the middle set it up like a circus tent. If the stick is in the very center there should be about five feet in all directions squarely to the sides. Now this Indian-like Teepee would need three of the corners of the tarp to be weighed down heavily with rocks, and dirt. Next I covered all the sides between the rocks with first dirt, then snow, then leaves to insulate the shelter from the freezing air. The last two sides(two not visible below) are left uncovered so the people can get in and out. a tight squeeze I'm sure. I'd also want them to bring some rocks in to close that last corner from the inside, and i might have them lay on the tarp on the inside (like how the preschoolers would all sit on the parachute on the inside to create their little bubble.) The bodies inside would keep the tent a little warmer. I would advise them to stay close to each other. If I could bury the entire thing it would be warmer but that is a little far fetched. There were no rules against fire, so my second design. looks exactly like an Indian teepee. It has a space in the roof to let out smoke, and the fire would be in the very center to create warmth. (two sticks rubbing furiously together.)
