Winter Shelter

I wasn't able to build the winter fort over our school break because I got very sick. Instead, I went outside this week and constructed a shelter in my backyard using a 10x10 tarp and some fallen branches.

(I apologize for the glare in the photos, iPhone cameras aren't the best at night, especially in the rain.)

Although it's not the nicest thing to look at, the shelter is functional and does a great job of keeping out the wind and rain (I actually tested it in this weather, it kept the inside surprisingly dry!). To build it, I used some large fallen branches and balanced them against a crooked tree in my yard. I had to angle them so the tops of each branch would lock each other in place, keeping them from falling or snapping. The hardest part was actually putting the tarp over the branches. I was afraid the branches would fall if I pulled too much, so I had to place it very carefully around the top. I used some pine branches on the ground as well so it would be a bit more comfortable to sit rather than on the muddy ground. This shelter was built on a small hill in my backyard, so no rain would be able to get in through the small opening where you would enter the shelter. It would probably only fit one person since I was the only one to test it, and it was pretty snug inside. It's no high-quality camping tent, but it will certainly keep you dry and out of the cold for the night.
