This snow day project was to create a votive candle holder out of ice. This was a difficult task because in my Italian family, all our leftovers are frozen for later use. Meaning there’s never enough space for anything extra. And here I was trying to freeze ice between two cups.
To make the cups freeze water into a shape, I used tape to hold one of the cups halfway into the other in the very center.
To make the candle holder's ice extremely clear, I double boiled the water to remove all impurities. Then after a few hours in the freezer I poured out half of the still unfrozen water, to get some air bubbles into the ice and to make it have an H shape instead of a U shape. That way, It would take less time to freeze, and it would be reversible. In the below video I have a candle in the part of the cup that I forced bubbles into for the design, and a tomato sitting on the counter underneath to show how clear the ice is in case you wanted to flip it over and use it the other way.
