Snow Cave

Snow Cave

For my snow creation I decided to make a snow cave. I decided to make this because when I was younger my brother and I would make them every time it snowed a good amount. So I went to the side of my driveway where the snow was piled up really high for shoveling and snow blowing the driveway.

Once I chose this spot to build my snow cave, I began by digging out the area in front of the big mound of snow (area to left of my shadow in middle picture). I dug out the snow in front of the big mound of snow so it would be easier for me to dig into the side of the snow mound in order to make a big snow cave. Once I completed digging out the area to make the snow cave inside of the mound of snow I tried laying down inside the cave and I couldn't lay down with my legs fully extended without hitting the wall of the snow cave. After laying down inside of my original snow cave, I decided to make it longer so I could lay down comfortably inside of it. Once I finished expanding it, the snow cave turned or being abut 6 and a half feet long, with the inside being about 2 and a half feet to 3  wide, and the height of the cave being about 2 to 3 feet tall. After building my snow cave to these dimensions I couldn't make it any wider or longer because the walls would collapse due to lack of snow supporting them.

After making this cave, I realized it could be really good for avoid wind gust and drifting snow in a blizzard. When I was in side of the cave I could here the wind blowing over me, yet I could now feel it blowing on me. It could also be used to stay warm and protected from the snow in a blizzard because the over hang of the cave is enough to cover your whole body, if you fit in the dimensions of the cave. If the wind was blowing into the big opening in the cave rather than away from it during a blizzard, you could easily block out the wind from hitting you by grabbing a tarp and using big blocks of snow to keep it covering the hole of the cave and from blowing away. You could also just take big blocks of snow and make an igloo so you are completely sealed from the outside.
